Jewish Rituals and Customs
Shalom of Tennessee’s caring team of providers assists in engaging our patients in Jewish religious rituals, offering them comfort, spiritual fulfillment, and a sense of community. Here are some of the rituals and customs we help facilitate:
Passover (Pesach)
- Seder Participation: Our team helps patients engage in parts of the Seder, such as tasting matzah, drinking grape juice, and reciting the Haggadah.
- Reciting the Four Questions: We assist patients in listening to or reciting the traditional questions asked during the Seder.
Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year)
- Shofar Blowing: We make it possible for patients to hear the shofar blasts, a deeply moving experience.
- Tashlich: Our team assists with the symbolic casting off of sins by helping patients throw bread crumbs into water, which can be done with a small bowl of water indoors.
Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day)
- Lighting Memorial Candles: Our providers assist in lighting candles in memory of those who perished.
- Listening to Stories: We share stories or readings about the Holocaust with our patients.
Jewish Burial
- Taharah and Shmira: Our team explains the significance of ritual purification (Taharah) and the practice of guarding the body (Shmira) to provide comfort to patients and their families.
- Recitation of Psalms: We assist in reciting Psalms or prayers that are traditionally said at a burial.
Yiddish Speaking
- Conversational Yiddish: Our team engages patients in simple Yiddish phrases or songs that may evoke memories and a sense of cultural connection.
Viddui Recitation
- Confessional Prayer: We assist patients in reciting the Viddui, a confessional prayer traditionally said before death, offering spiritual comfort and closure.
